YOU'VE GOT TO BE CAREFULLY TAUGHT

'You've Got to be Carefully Taught'

Music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II

You've got to be taught
To hate and fear,
You've got to be taught
From year to year,
It's got to be drummed
In your dear little ear
You've got to be carefully taught.

You've got to be taught to be afraid
Of people whose eyes are oddly made,
And people whose skin is a diff'rent shade,
You've got to be carefully taught.

You've got to be taught before it's too late,
Before you are six or seven or eight,
To hate all the people your relatives hate,
You've got to be carefully taught!

Jim I love South Pacific too. In fact the song u talked about raised my first thoughts contrary to what I had been taught as a child. The older I got the more it bothered me and I always try to remember Judge not less u be judged. Jesus also told us to love one another as He loved us. We are all Gods children and I don't think He loves me a bit more because I am white and someone else is of a different race. I know I don't need to quote Bible to you of all people but that's just my thoughts. Besides if God wanted to rebuke u I think He would do so Himself . Does that sound right? I realize He can use people but at the same time I feel that as a minister He would take that on Himself!! Just saying. Luv you

There is always something you say in these sharing times that I can share with someone else maybe not right away but usually within a few days.

I so appreciate the fact that you take the time to share your thoughts and teachings so selflessly. Even though our interactions at this point in time are exclusively through facebook, I want you to know how much I enjoy "walking in the light" with you.

I just came in from a bike ride. I ran into someone that doesn't really get me and reminds me too much of the old ways of thinking. I just happened to open this and watch it and a big old "thanks I needed that" to you Jim.

James Michener, author of Tales of the South Pacific, on which the musical is based, wrote in several of his books about Americans who settled in the South Pacific, bringing with them their prejudices against the Polynesians. Two that come to mind are a collection of stories and essays called Return to Paradise and his long novel Hawaii, both of which were filmed. Hawaii is most interesting (I think) because it is the story first of how the islands rose from the ocean, then how the Polynesians got there because of war in the Tahiti / Bora Bora area, then how the missionaries came behind the whalers (bringing New England puritanism and racism), then how the Chinese came because of famine in their country, then the Japanese (included is the story of the WWII Nesei and the prejudice they faced). Great writing and the films based on those books are worth checking out too.

I forgot to mention Michener's novel Sayonara, which is about bigotry against the Japanese among the American military personnel stationed in Japan. Red Buttons and Miyoshi Umeki both won Oscars in the film version, playing a couple who get married and hide out in Tokyo fter the guy goes AWOL.

What I love is that you take the high road and don't come down to their level...I quit believing 2/3 of the junk from sitting under your teachings... Not because you said it but it bore light with my Spirit and brought a new understanding what scriptures actually meant... If we could just Love God & each other there would be no division among us... Truth sets people free....P.S. I love South Pacific keep on bringing the Good News!

  11. Anthony Tony Williams We have to be born under the same month...
I do the same thing, when wanting to share knowledge with my kids.

It's going to be a HUGE shock to all those who say they love but it doesn't illuminate from their own spirit, their soul... HUGE shock because when we enter into life after this and we see Jesus who is the Light. And He is our only judge and He has no "filter" He IS LOVE.
regardless of color, creed, sex, orientations, status etc. just LOVE.
    LOVE YA BISH.
